Maternal Weight Changes during Pregnancy-Postpartum Period and Related Factors
Lee Seoung-Eun

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to offer pregancy-postpartum weight changes and its aspect, check the relevance of influencing factors shown in previous studies.

Methods: The study subjects were 252 women of postpartum 6¡12 months who visited public health centers and medical institutions in the Kyung-gi and Incheon areas. Trained research assistants conducted an personal interview.

Results: Women of 6¡12 months after childbirth displayed an average of 2.2 kg weight gain compared to before pregnancy, and BMI also increased by 0.8 (kg/§³). 40.5% women¡¯s weight was increased by more than 5% compared to that prior to pregnancy. In case of repeated childbirth, the weight was significantly increased every time. After birth, if one looks at the decrease speed of the postpartum weight, it decreased to 2.9 kg right after birth-postpartum two months or for confinement initial two months, but the decrease speed was gradually slowed after this. The more gestational weight gain (¥â=0.342) and the less breast feeding period (¥â=-0.146), the less postpartum weight gain (for 6¡12 months) is.

Conclusions: It is shown that weight change for the birth period must be treated as an important issue in woman health care. The most of all, the higher the pregnancy weight gain the higher the level of postpartum weight gain. A proper indicator about weight increase during pregnancy and advice for breastfeeding (more than 6 months) should be provided to prevent excessive weight gain in the postpartum period.
